This unique laptop bag is made from a mid Showa-era (1970s) woven silk Pre-Tied obi.
The laptop sits in the zippered section at the back of the Taiko (the knot). It sits closest to your body, along your back. This keeps the tech feeling very secure up against you. The maximum-size of laptop that will fit this bag is 10″ x 15″ x 1″. The phone holder on the strap will hold a Samsung S8 comfortably and closes with a magnet. there are also 2 creditcard slots available for quick access.
In order to keep the Taiko-shape, there is an additional small bag between the laptop pocket and the outside of the knot. This bag is 11″ x 12″ x 2.5″ deep, and made of grey duck cloth. It’s very sturdy, holds notebooks snugly, and closes with velcro for easy access. It is securely glued and sewn onto the bag, and will not budge, even when tugged quite hard. The strap is a total of 60″ long, and is meant to be worn cross-body. It is angled so that the velcro of the inner bag is angled up, preventing anything from spilling out, and closes with snaps. There are 3 sets for adjustability. If you are concerned about it fitting, please let me know, I’ll get some exact measurements for you.
This size and type of bag is very good for planes, because of it’s small size and easy access to the inner pocket for ID/wallet, camera, or snacks. Even when flying economy, you won’t feel the need to use the overhead bins, because this bag will sit snugly on your lap, or tuck easily under your seat.
I can make this same type of bag with any Obi, pre-tied or not, new or vintage. If you have an Obi in
mind, just make sure that the width of the knot is .5″ wider than your laptop (most OBI are 12″ wide, for reference). If you just want custom colors, let me know, I’d LOVE to scour the internet and find the perfect one for you.
